About the Davis Bike Club Racing Team
Background: The DBC Race Team is one subgroup within the Davis Bike Club (DBC). DBC is a non-profit organization with a thirty year history. The club has about 500 general members who participate in practically every type of cycling imaginable, including social riding, touring, ultra-distance, and racing. DBC (including the Race Team) is a community-based club and is open to anyone (more information on joining DBC).
The DBC Race Team supports all levels of racing. We actively promote underrepresented categories, e.g. women and juniors, with increased levels of support. Other programs include elite, masters, and mountain & cyclocross. The team also supports the UC Davis Cal Aggie cyclists, making it easier for them to continue racing past the collegiate season. The Aggies are also an integral part of the DBC junior development program, providing mentoring for DBC's youngest racers.
Team Support: DBC has a generous race-reimbursement policy with the goal of making the sport a bit more affordable. Reimbursement requests are filed once per year in October -- follow these instructions to get reimbursed for entry fees, uniforms, clinics, etc.). Note that the team requires some volunteer work at DBC-sponsored races in order to qualify for reimbursement.
Board of Directors: The DBC Race Team has a board of directors who meet every month or two. Please contact the Board of Directors for more information on participating.
Expectations for DBC racers and Disciplinary Policy: Racing for the Davis Bike Club has many benefits but also carries responsibilities. If you are riding for DBC, please read the club's behavior and disciplinary policy, as well as the DBC code of conduct.
DBC Races: DBC hosts two races every year, the Steve Dunlap Memorial Time Trial, and the Fourth of July Criterium. The Fourth of July Criterium can legitimately be called a "classic" race -- a Northern California institution in its 33rd year for 2009. The event features all day racing in downtown Davis for most categories, including a kid’s fun race. This race includes a generous prize list and is known for its technical eight-corner course. Past winners include Greg Lemond, Mike Sayers, Dave McCook, and Nathan Dahlberg. The Dunlap Time Trial is a memorial to Steve Dunlap, an inspirational DBC racer who tragically died in August 1991, at a young age of complications with asthma. This race raises money for the promotion of Junior racing within the Davis Bike Club. The proceeds of this event provide for coaching, equipment, and other expenses to assist local youth in their quest to succeed in cycling. The race has been run on a number of different courses over the years. The time trial has been run since 1990 in various places, most recently on a loop south of Davis.
DBC Race Team meetings: We have team meetings about once per month which are announced on the "team" mailing list. Meetings are usually held at the Hallmark Inn (Sequoia Room), 110 F Street in Davis (530-753-3600). Depending on the time of year, there may be a guest speaker and we may discuss past & upcoming races, uniforms, sponsor deals, race reimbursement, etc.
More Information: Please see the Team Programs and Information page for more detailed information about the DBC Race Team.
